The wonderful resources available to track your spending, it still seems to be out of control for most people. Money management programs such as Quicken and MS Money are great tools to help you track your spending.

Great article, Jim. I am more comfortable using cash in most instances and have not had a real problem as I rarely make online purchases and I live frugally, however, my cash-only lifestyle seems to bother people around me and I am looked at as if I have a third eye. I do not live to fill my life with impermanence of material things and I am happy this way. Everything I need can be purchased with cash (still). I understand the need for everyone else to jump on board with what is a popular form of payment right now and that is their choice. Don't get me wrong, I have used credit/debit card and the convenience of it is definitely attractive but fees/rates (they DO add up!) are not worth it to me. And I somehow feel like I'm no longer controlling my own money when using plastic. As in my choice of bags in the grocery stores, I say, "Paper please" :).

I never thought of it that way. I may have to lay off the Splenda. You're definitely right though. I usually take my coffees with some type of sugar substitute, then later in the day/week I would satisfy my sweet tooth by eating a candy bar or such.

Sigh. My sweet tooth is going to be the death of me.

When I moved out of my parents home, my Mom told me that if I wanted something to take it with me. Anything left behind was going to be thrown out. It's your Wife's and your home, not theirs. Put your collective feet down. Make rules and enforce them. They can't treat you like a maid or servent if you don't let them. Tough love is the way to go.
