Earth Day Tomorrow – 4/22/08
It’s Earth Day tomorrow! One quick and easy way to prticipate is to shut down your home computer when you are at work (or your work computer when you leave for the day). Systems-management firm 1E is urging U.S. desk workers to shut down their PCs completely before leaving work on Earth Day, April 22.
At 10.670 cents per kWh (Wisconsin Public Service residential rate), a typical PC left on overnight wastes $67.75 a year.
1E quotes a
“US PC Energy Report 2007 detailing the results from the research reveals some staggering findings:
• Out of 104 million office PCs in the US, at least 31.2 million are left on all night.
• Turning off every work computer in the United States every night would save as much CO2 emissions as taking every car in the state of Maryland off the road.
• The simple step of shutting computers down each night can save a 10,000 PC enterprise more than $165,000 a year in energy costs. Across the US, this adds up to more than $1.72 billion dollars and almost 15 million tons of CO2 emissions.”
