Concerned with saving money and energy? Take a few lessons from my grandparents. I remember my grandparents doing things I thought were silly when I was a kid. As a teenager I thought it was downright weird.
Grandma with the Kitty. What can I say? I had to differentiate my grandparents somehow when I was a toddler. She had a huge two story 4 bedroom house.
As a spoiled child of the Baby Boom/Generation X (Depending on which chart you look at), I was able to keep the heat 70 degrees during winter. With rising heating costs, Grandma’s idea is not so out there.
She would shut off rooms that were not used. During the day the heat would be turned down upstairs and extra blankets were used on the bed at night. I was so accustom to sleeping with one blanket because we kept it warm in our house when I was a child.
My grandparents also had a day bed in their dining room. They would sometimes sleep there and not even use the upstairs. She would also put a towel in front of the door leading to the upstairs to keep the heat on the first floor. They did use enough heat to keep the pipes from freezing in the upstairs bathroom though.
This year we shut off a spare room. Thanks Grandma.
