Generic Medications Versus Store Brands
Drug Store News is reporting on a new Harris Poll issued last week that 81% of those polled said they would most often choose the generic. In 2006 this same study had this at 68%.
This got me to thinking that when given the choice to pay more for drugs, they view the name brand and generic medicine as being pretty much the same and choose the less expensive generic.
What I would like to know from the same group of people is the choice of name brand versus generic food. I know the answer. These same people probably turn up their noses at store brand or generic products like macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, cereal, etc. Why? They perceive it to be better. And they probably would not even try the generic.
Many of these store brand and generic products come off the same truck as the name brand. I used to work at a grocery distributor. I have seen it. Take peanut butter. I know that the Peter Pan peanut butter is the same as most store brands. I know Wal-Mart store brand is Peter Pan. That is why when Peter Pan had a recall you could not find Wal-Mart’s peanut butter either.
So if you choose generic medicines, start to ask yourself why I think it is ok to get generic medicine, when I refuse to try store brand (fill in the product here)?
