I was cleaning the kitchen for a family get together and was washing the cupboards. There was a buildup of grease on the ones by the stove. No surprise. I looked for the degreaser by the cleaning supplies and we were all out. Being frugal and short on time, I called some friends to see if they knew of something I could make. They gave me the following recipe.

Put 1/4 cup baking soda in a bucket. Mix in 1 cup household ammonia to dissolve the baking soda. Make sure it is all dissolved. Add 1/2 cup vinegar and 64 oz hot water. Use a sponge to wipe down the cupboards. If you come across more stubborn grease, make a paste using baking soda and lemon juice.
WOW! This worked better than any store bought degreasers!

  1. Here are a couple things to remember though:
    1) Do NOT mix in bleach. Bleach and Ammonia is toxic!
    2) If you have painted cabinets try this on a hidden area first. You don’t want it to remove the paint.
    3) Be sure to wipe the cupboards down with clean water to get rid of residue and streaks.
    4) Dry off the cupboards water will warp the wood if you leave water sit on it.

Just my 2 cents. Jim @ ChangeJarSavings.com

Whenever I read tips like this I always think “My mom and grandmother were right all along.” They didn’t seek store-bought solutions because at one time they didn’t exist, and later because they would never have spent money on anything for which they had a frugal solution.

Being educated, informed and enlightened get in my way of being frugal. It seems that I always seek a store-bought solution especially for household cleaning when the frugal solutions make so much sense and cents.

Thanks to your blog I’m moving toward thinking of the frugal solution first, rather than last.

I have also read, but not tried, taking a cup of two of ammonia, sitting it in your oven, with the oven door closed, all night long.

Then, open and wipe the inside out with paper towels and sponges. It’s supposed to work great and it is a lot cheaper than Easy Off Oven Cleaner.

Make sure you wear gloves when wiping the inside of the oven out.

I gotta try that one of these days!
